Championing Whose Human Rights?

The latest news out of China is about a blind 40 year old man who is being protected by the US Embassy in Beijing. Because of his outspoken advocacy against forced late term abortions and sterilizations in his country, this man needs protection from his government. How timely it is that while we in America are being made aware of his situation, our Secretary of State, Ms. Hillary Clinton is on a plane to China at this very moment. Will Hillary be a voice for those women who are being forced by their government to abort their babies? Will Hillary speak up against the heinous act of late term abortions? Will Hillary, as a representatative of these great United States of America be a champion of Human rights? The burning question of my heart is this....JUst whose human rights will Hillary be championing for???? I strongly agree that late term abortions and sterilizations are monsrous crimes against the women forced to endure them. But..is there more than one crime against one person being committed here? Just whose human rights are we talking about? The rights of the women to give birth to their babies.AND the rights of those babies to be born! I mean, those babies are human, right? If Hillary is going to talk about human rights, then don't the babies being aborted get to enjoy those rights too? Don't they have human rights as humans themselves? And what about the fathers, are they not humans too? Don't fathers have rights? I'm curious to hear how Hillary will handle this precarious situation she finds herself in. How will she be a champion of human rights for the people of China when Hillary herself hails from a country that doesn't grant human rights to babies in the womb or the fathers of those babies. I mean, Can't you just hear China saying to Hillary, " What's so wrong about late term abortions,  aren't you a champion of such acts yourself In your country?....and just how do you think Hillary will answer?

Hilary Rosen, Can We Talk?

I just finished watching to White House reply to the Hilary Rosen comments made about Ann Romney. Me thinks that Hilary Rosen is being used. The White House called a press conference NOT to disavow the derogatory comments made by Ms. Hilary Rosen, but to enumerate the suppossed "good things" this president has done for women. Ahem! (Excuse me while I choke a bit!), it is becoming quite clear today that this president is "USING WOMEN" to achieve re-election. Has he no shame? He claims to be for women, pro- women, but he's just another guy using women. This so-called "WAR ON WOMEN" is a fabrication of a desperate campaign. somehow he got Hilary Rosen to make these inflammatory statements so he could call a press conference, not to condemn her statements but to use the situation for his purposes.

Hilary Rosen, can we talk? I am a stay at home mom. A mother of 6. I chose to raise my children rather than enter into the workforce. And that choice was not a luxury. My husband at the time made $4.00 an hour. Yes, you read that right, $4.00 an hour. We were not rich, in fact we were on food stamps for 3 1/2 years, and my oldest son's claim to fame was that he was raised on Government cheese! We decided that raising our children ourselves was much more important than two new cars, or a big house or European vacations! We sacrificed, as parents, to give our children a loving home, a place of peace, love and joy! AND God blessed us! We have 6 fine, upstanding, healthy, well adjusted, faithful, happy, loving children who are good citizens of this country, worship their God and love their parents and each other. Hilary, I worked very, very hard to raise my children and still do today. I can't even count how many diapers I changed, laundry loads I washed, vomit I cleaned up, dishes washed, floors mopped, meals cooked, car pools driven, tears I've wiped, hugs I've given, boo boos I've kissed, meeting I've attended, papers I've signed, parties I've helped with, cookies I've baked...but I did it all with a happy heart for the children that I love and I would do it all over again forsaking all the material things for the love of my children. Then again, God blessed us because He gave us opportunities to have a big house to raise our children in, 2 new cars so we could drive them around and even European vacations to take some of them on, all on one salary earned by my husband, while I stayed home and raised our children.  We walked the narrow path and God blessed us. It's not an easy path, but its the best one, to get where we are all trying to go.

What Are You Doing? I Was Almost finished!

The other night i was sitting at the kitchen table with two of my children. Hope, who is 12 and Sean, my oldest, who just turned 27. Hope is learning to decipher the Rubiks cube. Remember that toy? It was the most frustrating toy I ever played with. But play with it I did AND I never was able to get all those colors on their right sides, no matter how much time I spent trying to do so but that was a long time ago. I haven't thought about that Rubiks cube since then. But I guess that toy is enjoying some kind of resurgence. Hope is trying to learn how to solve it. Her brother Preston has done it, and he is spoon feeding her little bits of information necessary to solving the puzzle. While Hope, Sean and I were sitting at the kitchen table having a conversation, I picked up the rubiks cube, (literally without thinking) that was sitting on the table between Hope and I  and started to play with it, moving the pieces around, twisting and turning the cube. Hope screamed, "NO!" ....."What?, I replied." "You ruined it! I was working on that and you ruined it!", she answered. I had no idea what she meant by my ruining it. Then Sean in his usual wisdom spoke up. "Mom, you know how when your building a puzzle and you have it almost completed....and someone walks by and starts to break off pieces that you have already put in place and starts messing all the pieces together and messing the whole thing up...well that's what you just did with Hopes Rubiks cube." "Oh", I replied, " I'm sorry, I just had no idea, but now I get it. It's like when God starts fashioning a baby in the womb and an abortionist comes along and starts tearing the baby apart, limb by limb, and God yells, " What are you doing? I was almost finished!

Sandra Fluke and the Slippery Slope....

I intended to write a whole blog on this subject but then I realized that its already been written. I suppose I could say a whole lot about Sandra Fluke and the slippery slope she and the rest of us are sliding down. But why do so if I can't say it any better than the work that's already been published.  And so, without further ado...

Texting During the Lenten Season

I suppose it would be a very difficult thing for a young person today to give up texting for lent. It wasn't something I would have even thought of suggesting to my 6 children whose main form of communication is texting. I myself knew that if i wanted to have an open line of communication with my kiddos I would have to concede and learn to text. And so I did. I've been texting now for about 2 years and it is definitely a learned behavior. Often when what I really want to do is pick up the phone and call one of my children, I end up texting instead. Only because when I am free and able to talk they usually aren't. Three are in college, one works full time and the other two are in high school and middle school. So, texting has become a matter of convenience, so to speak, no pun intended! This lent, I decided to use texting to my advantage. Little did my children know what they had done when they encouraged and taught me how to text. Since 3 of my children live on campus away from home and texting with them has become almost a daily ritual, I realized that this lenten season I could take that daily ritual and make good use of it, just as Blessed Pope John Paul II encouraged during his papacy, "...to use technology for good." And so I had this brilliantly scathing idea to text my children daily for the 40 days of lent. A simple reflection, a saintly quote, a scripture verse, something short and sweet during their busy day to cause them to reflect on the spiritual, to remember God in their day, to consider the Eternal! I've enjoyed the opportunity to do this for my children so far. It has caused me to think also, of those things I should be pondering this lenten season, and so in the end, what I thought I was doing to help my children on their spiritual journey has been a growth experience for my own. In the words of someone famous," It's a good thing!"

Nancy Pelosi, You should be Ashamed!

I watched a news clip this morning of Nancy Pelosi, arguably the most ant- Catholic, ant-woman today....Ok, maybe she's tied  for first place with Kathleen Sebelius, aka the secretary of Health and Human Services. At an event held at Texas A & M University this week, Ms. Pelosi said that 98% of Catholic women from the age of 14 to 50 use contraceptives. WHAT???? First off this is a skewed statistic and Ms. Pelosi should know this, since she is an elected representative of this country, she should make it her job to "state the facts" AND state them accurately, so as not to mislead the people. The poll from which this statistic was taken asked the question, " How often do you go to mass/ attend religious services?" and the answer was ," about once a month."....Ms. Pelosi knows, as a Catholic herself that this is NOT a practicing Catholic. One of the precepts of the Church is to participate in mass each and every Sunday and every Holy Day of Obligation. Even a 5th grader knows that once a month doesn't quite fit the criteria. Nancy Pelosi, You Should be  Ashamed!
Secondly, when Ms. Pelosi stated that catholic women from the age of 14 to.....my head almost exploded. I could hardly listen to the rest of what she had to say. The age of 14... the age when girls are barely entering high school....and their main concerns for the weekend are getting to the mall and not sprouting a pimple before Monday? Back in my day we hoped to land a babysitting job and make some extra money to go to the mall. Baby sit other peoples children that is- like the young MARRIED couple down the street! At 14,what girls are thinking about and using contraception? The big questions here are, "Where in the world are these girls parents and what are they teaching them?  If Nancy Pelosi is advocating that 14 year old girls should be sexually active and that tax payers should foot their contraceptive bills, then Nancy Pelosi, You Should Be Ashamed of yourself! And that goes for you too Kathleen Sebelius!

Sacrifice and the College Life of my Daughter

Lent begins today. For practicing Catholics that means the start of a 40 day journey of sacrifice. Giving up something....something meaningful for the lenten season. Its meant to feel like a sacrifice. I've always taught my children that it should be something that is a challenge. My little ones like to give up things like, "school". They claim it's something they like and that it would be a challenge to "not go to school" for 40 days. Was I born yesterday? The older ones are more thoughtful when considering their sacrifice.
My husband and I are raising 6 children. Three of them are in college. Now, college life for some, is an easy ride for 4 years on dad's nickel. For others is all about the college experience....underage drinking...frat parties...2am feedings of fast food...etc. For my one daughter though it's none of those things. It's all about finishing her degree...study, study, study. Frat parties aren't her thing. Neither is fast food or drinking. And dad's nickel got lost  somewhere, tossed in the waves when the economy crashed, just when my daughter was going off to college. She has sacrificed much over the years. She eats ramen 7 days a week now. Last fall it was cans of beans. Before that it was pretzels and peanut butter. She pinches every penny...sometimes I almost believe she could squeeze blood from a turnip! Living 2 hours away from home and with gas prices rising daily she fears wasting even a drop of this liquid gold by venturing out thus she keeps herself homebound in her apartment even on weekends. She'll graduate in December, but with a tight job market, her looming tuition debt is just another thorn in her side. I texted her this morning to ask her what she was giving up for lent. She replied, "So just what more can I give up? I've been giving up for years. What do you suggest I give up?"
Thank goodness the Church has encouraged a lenten journey with choices lately. Suggestions like, doing a little extra something or adding a new spiritual practice to your routine, have become some of the "choices" to our usual "giving up" of something.

My response... I texted back.... "OK, you don't have to give something up. Then how about adding something, like a prayer to your daily routine? Then I texted...
Let nothing disturb you
Nothing fear you
All things are passing
God alone is changeless
patience obtains all things
he lacks nothing who possesses God
God alone suffices.

She replied, "OK, I'll pray this every morning"

Thank you God! Thank you Holy Mother Church. This is going to be a most wonderful, fruitful Lent. My daughter has no idea.....

"For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice, and knowledge of God rather than holocausts."

Abortions, appendectomies and tonsillectomies

Let's play a guessing game....

Appendectomies remove________?

tonsillectomies remove__________?

Abortions remove_____________?

Appendectomies remove... an appendix... if you guessed appendix you are correct.

Tonsillectomies ...remove tonsils... if you guessed tonsils you are correct again.
That's two for two. Wow , you're pretty good at this game.

Ok, last one.... Abortions remove ....a blob of tissue. OMG...you are right again. I thought you might mess up and say something like A BABY. Then you would have been wrong because everyone knows it's not A BABY, it's just a blob of tissue. Oh, never mind the fact that there's a beating heart, Ten fingers. Ten toes. Arms.Legs.A body of its own. Did I mention a beating heart? Never mind all that. it's just a blob of tissue!

Yeah right....who are we trying to fool?

HHR Mandate and Women's Reproductive rights

Did I hear that right? The other night on Fox news I heard a woman say that this issue with Obamas HHR mandate is not about religious liberty but about women's health and reproductive rights. REALLY??? Womens health and reproductive rights? Does the Obama Administration know what the number 1 killer of women is in this country? It just so happens to be heart disease, and yet I don't see anywhere in the mandate giving us free Crestor or Lipitor.
And why are they calling this women's reproductive rights? Isn't this a misnomer? I haven't heard anything in the mandate that has anything to do with reproducing. Everything in the mandate is meant to keep a woman from reproducing- birth control pills, abortifacients, sterilization, etc.  None of these facilitate the birth of babies, also known as "reproduction". All of these products stop a woman from reproducing. Let's call it what it is. It may sound harsh. It may sound evil. But I was always taught that if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and sounds like a duck. Its a duck. This isn't about a womans right to reproduce. This is about mandating womens unnatural desire to stop having babies....and if by chance she does get pregnant, someone has convinced her she can kill her baby...legally...under the pretense of reproductive rights. Now that's a dead duck!

Thanksgiving.....

What if.....all you had today was what you were thankful for on Thanksgiving????
Be thankful for all you have, even what might seem like the littlest of things. I am in my warm home sitting in front of my computer today with my robe on, slippers on my feet, hot cup of coffee within my reach, mass on the TV (EWTN) while its 35 degrees outside! Prayed with and kissed husband goodbye as he went off to work means he's gainfully employeed. Sent children off to school means they are getting an education. Ran the dishwasher means we have food to eat. Started a load of laundry in the washer means we have clothes.  I am thankful for all these things and so much more. Thank you God for my life. Thank you for all I have and all I do not have. I am surely blessed.
